On the surface Mina is demure, ever the presentation of a typical Victorian woman. She is sensible and quiet, though this facade hides her darker past, and the secrets that Mina buries deep. Her calm presentation isn't solely an act, with Mina carefully choosing how she speaks and acts. She keeps a steel control over herself, a constant internal battle between the human she was and the bestial nature of the vampire she now is. Hiding behind being a woman, allowing those that don't know her to see her as weak, also serves to keep her unnoticed, letting her conduct her business without any questions.
DISTANT. Though Mina is calm she will plainly make it clear when there is something that disagrees with her. She has very high morals and little patience for annoyances or actions that go against her beliefs. Mina has a sharp wit, able to quickly return comments or jabs back on someone with her own particular bite. Due to what Mina sees as valued traits in a person can make it difficult to get to know her, though this guard is more to protect herself and keep people at a lengthy distance. Whilst Mina initially finds Skinner to be highly annoying, and Sawyer to be naive, through the time of working with them and knowing them better she grows a sort of respect for them. Mina's caution and desire to keep people away is done in order to keep hidden the truth about her -- to keep secret not only that she is a vampire but to prevent anyone from finding out about the monster she has become. As well as keeping the truth hidden it also protects other people -- they can't become hurt if they aren't close. Over time Mina's walls also crumble slightly. Initially, highly guarded and incredibly private, Mina refused to allow the League to know anything about her, brushing each away with a comment of (polite) disregard. Though divulging the nature of her vampirism was done in necessity Mina begins to slowly allow each of them to know something about her. Working with them showed Mina that she could begin to trust them and her conversations became a little friendlier, if still distant. As Mina has built up her walls through years of keeping people at bay, and even fears letting people in (and seeing the truth to her), it is difficult to get to truly, openly know her, though a small measure of trust can make the difference between open refusal or a smile and conversation.
SELF-LOATHING. With her caution also comes a strong measure of self-loathing and repulsion. Though Mina has accepted that she is now a vampire, cursed in the 'life' that she has, it isn't something that brings her any pleasure. She's kept hidden from the world in the years since she turned to prevent the spread of the curse, refusing to turn anyone as Dracula turned her. It is only through working with the League that Mina was able to do some 'good' as a vampire, saving the lives of her team, and helping to save Venice, though it hadn't changed her opinion of what she is, and what it means. Whilst she can save lives Mina's 'role' in the world is intertwined with death for she must kill to survive, or to save a life, and that is something that she finds difficult to swallow.
CALCULATED. All of what Mina does, her cleverly constructed persona and actions, are a testament to her intelligence. As a scientist, Mina already possesses great knowledge, though her act requires a different set of skills. Mina needs to be cunning, collected, and be able to think several steps ahead in order to only reveal what she wants people to know. Mina's strategy also aided with the League, as she was able to contribute to plans, decide how and when to act, and had a hand in attempting to uncover M's plans. This, in addition to being a vampire, leads Mina to be outcasted by society. She is a widow, with a profession that is not yet widely accepted and can be outspoken. Though brilliant Mina keeps it all hidden in order to blend in.
DECISIVE. Whilst Mina is calm, letting most things simply brush off her, she also possesses a dangerous temper. If angered, and if her control slips, Mina has a wild fury, and her actions are quicker, decisive and deadly. It is rare for this to happen, as Mina keeps herself in check (and her bloodlust sated), and situations often tend to need to anger her more personally. With Dorian, due to his betrayal, Mina would allow no other to kill him and had the option of taking him as a prisoner to answer for his crimes been suggested it would have been one she argued against. She also remarks about her fury, asking Dorian if he knows what he has released in her. Due to how wild, and dangerous, her vampiric nature can be it is something that frightens Mina -- she doesn't want to become the monster she battles with, to lose control of herself or the situation. It helps her to find a kinship with Henry Jekyll, knowing that he understands the fear of the monster inside, and the surprise (and pleasure) of when that monster can do something good -- something that is a rare occurrence for them both.
CARING.Though Mina has hidden away from the world it doesn't mean that she doesn't care, but rather is a sign that she does care (and is still human). Whilst she does so to protect herself Mina also hides to protect the world from what she is, and to stop it spreading further. She also, when drawn back into the world through the League, fights first to protect the world from the Fantom, helping to save Venice from destruction, and fights again to stop the spread of each of the Leagues abilities, protecting them from the individual demons. There is a great deal of care and goodness in how Mina chooses to fight, and that she does at all, and though she would never say she was a hero she also could not bear to see people fall if it could be prevented. Although there is much reluctance to her -- a reluctance to be involved with the world, to know people, and to have herself known, it is the fact that despite this Mina chooses to act, to do right, and battles against everything inside her to make things safe. Powers and Abilities: VAMPIRISM. Turned by Dracula Mina's abilities are said to be equal to his, though much of what Dracula is described to have done comes from an unreliable narrator. As a result of being a vampire, Mina is immortal, has superhuman-abilities and is able to draw others hypnotically under her influence, however, due to her dislike of what she is Mina refuses to do this. Described below are the abilities that Mina does actually use. As a vampire Mina's eyes take on a red-appearance, claws growing and her hair curling (turning wild) with the more of her abilities that she uses. IMMORTALITY. Cursed Mina is ageless, invulnerable to harm and disease and possesses accelerated healing. She is very difficult to kill, with traditional weaponry doing little damage to her. Even stabbed through the heart by a blade Mina was able to recover from it in seconds once it had been removed. Her weaknesses consist of holy symbols and sacramental bread. Sunlight does weaken her abilities, causing her some pain, though she is able to move about and function in the day. SUPERHUMAN SENSES. Mina possesses greater speed, strength and reflexes than a human. Dracula's strength was described as being equivalent to that of twenty strong men, with Mina's being assumed to be of similar levels. She is also a capable fighter, either with a dagger, sword or her own claws, with her enhanced physiology aiding her in a fight. SHAPESHIFTING. Mina is able to turn herself into a cloud of bats, splitting into multiple directions to attack her enemies. FLIGHT. Additionally, to flight as a bat Mina can fly herself. It isn't over distance, more of a leaping and swooping action, giving her the ability to scale large buildings, moving from enemy to enemy. SCIENCE. Trained as a chemist Mina is knowledgeable in the science of her time, with a passing familiarity in biology and first aid.
